We include a database not only of AIML Bot projects but also of closely related AIML spinoffs, as well as proprietary non-AIML languages and companies, and a survey of chat robot software patents.

Some companies have adopted or adapted AIML by the "embrace and extend" philosophy and created unique proprietary platforms that make use of some AIML features, or make it possible to translate AIML scripts to their own languages. These AIML spinoffs show the value of the minimalist AIML design philosophy, making it relativey easy to create new languages with the same essential features and content as AIML.
