I had the pleasure of attending the San Francisco premiere of the new Lynn
Hershman Leeson film Teknolust at SFMOMA last night. The film, from the
director of Conceiving Ada, is a wonderful black comedy on the bleeding edge
of technology, love, sex and gender. The totally coolest thing about this
movie is the tie-in to the "portal" www.agentruby.com which is an AIML/Flash
chat robot. In some sense the movie is one big commercial for the web site,
going as far as telling the actress, in one scene, to be "more robotic" on
the web site, "so people don't know you are real".

The only disappointment of the evening was the absence of the lead actress,
Tilda Swinton (Conceiving Ada, Orlando, The War Zone), who was busy with a
new film project. Tilda played four roles in Teknolust! My driver Russ was
amazed. I told him she played a man in one of her films. Her absence was
made up for by the appearance of the director Lynn Hershman, who gave some
great insights into the history and sources behind Teknolust. We also met
the multi-talened Joshua Kornbluth (Haiku Tunnel), who plays one of Ruby's
(Tilda's) hapless male victims. I don't want to give away too much of the
plot, but I think all ALICE and AIML fans will find something to like in
this movie.

My manservant Angus would be amazed, too, but my gardener Reggie is too
jaded to care about such stargazing.
